Presentation of Culture Matters in Bucharest
Bucharest, 19 January 2010 – Yesterday’s opening of the Galateca Gallery’s Culture Matters exhibition by Martin Eichtinger, Austria’s Ambassador to Romania, was also attended by the Director of the Romanian National Library and the Director of the Central University Library in Bucharest.
Culture Matters depicts a total of eighteen UNESCO world heritage sites in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Croatia, the Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. In his opening address Ambassador Eichtinger pointed out that the exhibition is intended to make visitors aware of a common Southeastern European heritage inspired by Greek, Roman, early-Christian, Byzantine, Ottoman and Jewish influences that should be remembered in the wake of one of the twentieth century’s cruellest wars which severely scarred this region of Europe.
Among the sites depicted is the Old Bridge in Mostar, which was destroyed by war and later rebuilt, and is now a symbol of the region’s reconstruction. Medieval Dubrovnik is also represented, and although it too has been fully restored, many of the sites continue to be threatened by decay. The exhibition shall continue until 28 January.
