One language, two countries, four artists – a comparison
The Austrian Cultural Forum in Berlin and the Heike Curtze gallery are showcasing the latest works by young Austrian and German artists
Berlin, 8 February 2010 – The title of the exhibition alone - `Stille Post´ (Chinese whispers) – points out to a form of communication, a dialogue and exchange made possible by the common language, which can, however, be rendered more difficult as a result of immanent differences. This ambivalent background offers in turn the possibility of reorientation and interpretation, a fresh look at seemingly well-known and proven approaches.
The Austrian Cultural Forum in Berlin and the Heike Curtze gallery presented an exciting comparison of the latest works by young Austrian and German artists in the gallery at Checkpoint Charlie. What the four artists have in common is that their works deal with space and landscape, with the human body and bodies in a more abstract sense, as well as the relation between void and surface, yet their individual approaches are extremely different.
Formally reduced and completely permeated by word elements, and using the human body as their centre, the works of Petra Sterry (*1967, Graz) almost seem to be telling a story. In his works, Markus Krön (*1970, Salzburg) subtly thematizes the landscape of the Alpine Foreland; in his almost realistic painting style, he does not deplore the traces left behind by human civilization but fathoms their aesthetic value instead. In seemingly abstract collages, Bettina Khano (*1972, Hamburg) focuses her attention on a new location of the body in space. With her approach, she attempts to reconstruct space through the body. The movement and rhythm of Franziska Hünig’s (*1970, Dresden) own body determine the painting process, characterized by a gestural application of colour. Her works, often in a large format, correspond to the radius of her body.
After the exhibition, visitors are treated to a glass of wine.
