Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger on the outcome of the presidential elections in the Ukraine
Vienna, 9 February 2010 - Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger welcomed the conduct of the elections in the Ukraine which were given a positive assessment by OSCE international observers. The Foreign Minister congratulated the citizens of the Ukraine on the high voter turnout and their strong support of the democratic process: “The winner of the presidential elections is the Ukrainian people. Through the high voter turnout people demonstrated their commitment and democratic attitude in two elections.”
“The fact alone that the presidential elections were held without any major incidents demonstrates that the Ukraine’s democratic development and the achievements of the 2004 Orange Revolution are irreversible. What is important is that all political forces in the country should view these elections as a mandate for the swift establishment of political stability and the continuation of the reforms launched,” continued Spindelegger.
“The population deserves a smooth and peaceful transition at the helm of the state. It is imperative for the head of state to deal with the difficult economic situation of the country, mustering all his strength, and continue the necessary reforms in a swift and consistent manner,” concluded Spindelegger.
