Spindelegger: "We support Morroco's reform path"
Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger meets Moroccan Foreign Minister in Vienna
Vienna, 3 July 2013 – Bilateral relations, the developments in Morocco and North Africa and in particular the current crisis in Egypt and the civil war in Syria were at the centre of today’s meeting between Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger and the Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Morocco, Saâd-Eddine El Otmani, in Vienna.
"We wish for the ‘Moroccan way’ that was laid out in 2011 to be successful. Austria would welcome the opportunity to share its expertise regarding rule of law, good governance and institutions“, Spindelegger said today after the meeting with his Moroccan counterpart. He welcomed the intensified visiting schedule and the mutual interest in closer political and economic cooperation. Spindelegger said he was confident that Morocco would implement the human rights contained in its 2011 Constitution quickly and efficiently, in particular when it comes to equal rights for men and women, the protection of women against violence in private and public space and freedom of the press.
"I also made use of our meeting to discuss the security situation in the Sahel and the developments in North Africa and the Middle East", Spindelegger continued. In addition to the challenges faced by the transition states of the Arab world and possible support for these far-reaching transition processes, the emphasis was also on the crisis in Egypt and the civil war in Syria. "It is imperative that a political solution for Syria is found as soon as possible to end the current bloodshed and instigate a process of democratic reorganisation that is supported by a broad majority and takes into account the interests of the minorities", Spindelegger concluded.
