Spindelegger: Burgas terror attack must be fully resolved
Vice-Chancellor Spindelegger talks to his Bulgarian counterpart Mladenov
Vienna, 8 February 2013 – Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger commented as follows on the preliminary results of the investigations carried out by the Bulgarian authorities into the terror attack on Israeli tourists at Burgas Airport on 18 July 2012, which resulted in the deaths of 5 Israelis and 1 Bulgarian citizen: “We condemn terrorist acts of any kind in the strongest possible terms. Such acts are unacceptable and abhorrent. I also emphasised this standpoint today during my talks with my Bulgarian counterpart Mladenov. I have expressed satisfaction with the investigations carried out by the Bulgarian authorities as well as my deep sympathy for the Bulgarian and Israeli victims and their families.” The Foreign Minister continued: “Such acts must not go unpunished. Those responsible must be brought to justice.”
On 5 February, Bulgarian Minister of the Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov had declared that there was reason to assume that members of the military wing of the Lebanese Hezbollah were behind the bomb attack of Sarafovo Airport in Burgas. “These assumptions are currently being discussed in detail with Bulgaria at EU level. We will coordinate any further approaches and consequences with our EU partners”, the Vice-Chancellor concluded.
