Austrian appointed head of the OSCE in Albania
Spindelegger congratulates Ambassador Raunig on his appointment as head of the OSCE Presence in Albania
Vienna, 19 July 2013 – The sustained strengthening of public institutions, in particular in the justice sector and in election processes, is among the main fields of activity of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Albania. In addition, the organisation’s work includes the fight against trafficking in human beings, the disposal and destruction of surplus weapons and ammunition, support for good governance and the training of the police force, as also reinforcing the independence of the media and civil society.
The appointment of Austrian Ambassador Florian Raunig thus represents a very special acknowledgement of the Austrian contribution to the further anchoring of European values and standards in the states of the Western Balkans, Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said in his congratulatory address and added: "Ambassador Raunig is a friend of Albania and he knows the country intimately. He not only has close personal contacts throughout the country, he also has outstanding knowledge of the Albanian language. During his term as Austrian Ambassador in Montenegro and Albania he was able to acquire many years of valuable working experience, and he also developed a powerful network throughout the entire region, a factor which will surely be of the greatest value to him in his future activities. I am convinced that he is the ideal person for this highly responsible job and I wish him every success."
Spindelegger added: "Albania, Austria and the OSCE will all benefit equally from this appointment decision made during the Ukrainian chairmanship of the OSCE. As the country in which the OSCE is based, Austria has an especially strong commitment to the organisation, and in the past has always sent outstanding experts to work in the Western Balkan countries, for example the current High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ambassador Valentin Inzko. Austrian expertise in the region has achieved international recognition due to this dedicated work." Furthermore Austria has also provided substantial personnel support for the Althea Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina and for the KFOR in Kosovo. Ambassador Raunig will take up his new position on 1 October.
