Spindelegger condemns Syrian attack on Turkish territory
Vienna, 4 October 2012 – “We strongly condemn the Syrian attack on Turkey”, Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said. “Our sympathy goes out to the family of the five Turkish citizens who have lost their lives in this assault.”
“Attacks of this kind are a blatant violation of the territorial integrity of a neighbouring state and put the stability and security of the entire region at risk”, the Vice-Chancellor said and added that such acts would contribute to further escalation of an already dangerous situation. Spindelegger called upon the Syrian government to apologise for this attack and to assume responsibility for it.
At the same time, the Vice-Chancellor urged the Turkish government to remain calm. “It is understandable that shock and outrage prevail, but we still trust in the level-headedness and caution of the Turkish government with a view to security in the entire region.”
