Spindelegger welcomes President of the 66th General Assembly of the UN
Vienna, 11 May 2012 – “The United Nations General Assembly has taken a firm stance and shown its commitment in all the developments related to the Arab Spring and especially with regard to the outbreak of violence in Syria. Regular and in-depth exchanges of opinions with its President is thus essential in times such as these”, Austrian Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said after his working meeting with the President of the 66th General Assembly, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, at the Austrian Foreign Ministry this morning. The discussions focused, among other things, on the situation in Syria, the peace process in the Middle East and the imminent Rio +20 Conference.
Other topics were the issues that dominate the work of Al-Nasser’s presidency, such as the rule of law and the importance of mediation for conflict prevention. “Rule of law was one of Austria’s priorities during its membership in the UN Security Council and we are consistently pursuing this aim now as a member of the UN Human Rights council. In this context we welcome the commitment of the President of the United Nations General Assembly in these important areas”, Spindelegger said and informed Al Nasser about the 5th Annual Forum of the Alliance of Civilisations to be held in Vienna in February 2013.
