"Women and public space"
Round-table discussion at the Austrian Embassy in Ankara
Ankara, 22 January 2010 – The latest meeting of the Austro-Turkish Women’s Platform at the Austrian Embassy in Ankara focused on women’s quality of life in urban public space. In a round-table discussion Ursula Bauer, project leader and expert on gender mainstreaming of the Municipal Directorate of the City of Vienna, presented pilot projects and measures realised by the City of Vienna over the past two decades.
“Substantial improvements have been achieved, particularly in the field housing, by involving female architects in project design activities,” asserted Ms Bauer. These experiences elicited great interest among the Turkish participants, and gave rise to an animated discussion on the possible implementation of these ideas from Vienna in Turkey’s towns and cities.
