Model of Hartheim Castle presented to the newly opened
Vienna, 5 November 2010 – Today, a model of Hartheim Castle was presented to US Ambassador William Carlton Eacho in the presence of the Austrian Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Johannes Kyrle. The model, which was made available by the Hartheim Castle Education and Memorial Site Society, shall be on permanent loan to the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust.
From 1940 on, Hartheim Castle was one of the six Nazi euthanasia killing centres. Within the framework of the exhibition in the re-opened Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, the model shall recall the Nazi’s Euthanasia Programme and the annihilation of European Jews in the course of Operation Reinhard.
“Presenting a model of Hartheim Castle to the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust in the Foreign Ministry underlines the importance we attribute to the remembrance of the unimaginable atrocities of the Nazi regime. However, our commitment cannot just be mirrored in handing over this model: on the contrary, we have to enable future generations to face these unimaginably terrible events. It is therefore our obligation to provide information on the holocaust as well as to support this within other institutions,” stated Secretary General Johannes Kyrle.
Built between 2003 and 2004 by Helmut Gsöllpointner, the model was ordered by Georg Starhemberg, President of the Castle Hartheim Society. Following its completion it was exhibited at Hartheim Castle - Place of Learning and Remembrance.
