A historic day in Ankara
Ankara, January 26 2010 – On January 25, the „Anniversary Year 2009“ of bilateral relations between Austria and Turkey was celebrated at a festive reception in the Austrian Embassy in Ankara:455 diplomatic relations between the two empires, 85 years of friendship treaty between the two republics, 75 years of Austrian Embassy and 40 years of Foreign Trade Office in Ankara.
Speeches were held by Ambassador Heidemaria Gürer, by the Austrian Parliament Member Alev Korun, and the Austrian historian Oliver Rathkolb, as well as the Deputy Chairwoman of the Turkish-Austrian Friendship group in the Turkish Parliament, Sükran Ayalan.The ceremony was also attended by Turkish State Minister Hayati Yazici and the Chairman of the EU Harmonization Committee in the Turkish Parliament, Yasar Yakis.At the end of the ceremony, two memorial plaques in remembrance of the some 60 Austrian ambassadors who served in the Ottoman Empire and in later Turkey were unveiled.
This event was preceded by a concert of classical music and jazz on January 23, organized as a sign of the friendship and mutual cultural influence between Austria and Turkey, which was broadcast live on the state TV channel TRT TÜRK from the Austrian Embassy and featured the Turkish-Austrian musician duo Attila Aldemir and Tuglu Tirpan, accompanied by the world-famous Turkish drummer Burhan Öcal who lives in Zurich.
