Spindelegger: "A place of dialogue in the centre of Vienna"
Opening of the new House of the European Union in Austria
Vienna, October 16th 2009: "Explaining Europe requires teamwork. The European institutions and their representations in the members states, too, must reach out to the citizens and seek a permanent dialogue with them. After all, this is the only way to communicate the use and purpose of a united Europe to our citizens", stressed Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger today on the occasion of the official opening of the new house of the European Union in Vienna.
In the presence of EU Commission President Barroso and EU Parliament President Buzek, the Foreign Minister emphasized his wish that the new house in the Wipplingerstraße will soon develop into both a lively and well-frequented place of dialogue for Europe.
"In its role as an interface between the European Institutions and the population, the !`House of Europe’ and its representatives can make a significant contribution toward explaining and making more understandable to the people the decisions taken on a European level. My ‘listening tour’ through Austria has shown me that many citizens want more information and more discussion on Europe", said the Foreign Minister. "This House is a valuable contribution to our efforts toward greater involvement of the citizens and toward providing more attractive points of contact for a lively dialogue on Europe."
"We plan to further intensify the dialogue on Europe and to offer citizen-oriented information about the European Union. I invite each and every citizen to contribute ideas and to visit the ‘House of the European Union’ to inform themselves firsthand", Spindelegger concluded.
