First Austrian cantor concert and exhibition in the Great Synagogue of Moscow
Moscow, 9 October 2009 – The first concert of a Viennese chief cantor in the Great Synagogue of Moscow took place upon the invitation of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow. Following an evening in the Jewish Community Center Moscow, the world-famous cantor of Vienna’s Jewish community and singer Shmuel Barzilai performed a successful concert in the historic Great Synagogue of Moscow. Some 150 guests attended the concert, including the vice-president of Vienna’s Jewish community and renowned representatives of the Jewish community of Russia, such as the chief rabbi for the whole of Russia, Adolf Schaebitsch and the chief rabbi of Moscow and president of the rabbinical court, rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt.
As the host, the president of the Jewish community of Moscow, Leopold Y. Kaymovskiy welcomed the guests from Vienna and the Austrian ambassador in Russia, Dr. Martin Vukovich, who addressed the audience in a brief speech.
Shmuel Barzilai’s concert offered a great musical variety, ranging from Yiddish songs from Vienna to famous songs from America.
The interior of the 19th-century building, dominated by gold and paintings, provided an ideal setting for the concert and for the works by Deborah Barzilai (the wife of the singer), whose paintings describe Jewish life, prayers, and writings, and which perfectly blended in the ambience of the magnificent synagogue.
After the concert, the artist couple, Ambassador Dr. Martin Vukovich, and the Director of the Cultural Forum in Moscow were invited by the hosts and the chief rabbis present at the event to a jovial sukkot in the tabernacle erected next to the synagogue.
