Performance by soloists of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the reception held to mark Austria's national holiday in Prague
Prague, 4 November 2008 - This year, Austria's national holiday celebrations in Prague commemorated the year 1918, which saw the foundation of both the Republic of Austria and the Republic of Czechoslovakia. To mark this special occasion the Embassy extended invitations to 1,300 guests for a concert performed by soloists of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Schubert Octet, in the large hall of Obecni dům, the Prague Concert Hall. The soloists of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra gave an hour-long performance of Schubert’s Octet in F major, with two waltzes as encores.
The guests included, among others, former President Václav Havel, ministers, numerous senators, representatives, diplomats, figures from business and public life as well as many Austrians living in the Czech Republic.
The concert was followed by the traditional reception. Obecni dům was expressly chosen as the venue because it was there that Czechoslovakia’s independence was declared on 28 October 1918.
