Looking for Austrian traces in Transsylvania
Opening of exhibition "Empire at the Periphery"
Vienna, 19 October 2007 - On October 20, the Exhibition "Empire at the Periphery. Austrian Traces in Sibiu" will open in Sibiu, Romania, and will constitute the largest Austrian project during the festivities of Sibiu’s being European Cultural Capital 2007. For almost a century, from 1692 to 1790, the Habsburg Province of Transylvania was administered from Hermannstadt, today's Sibiu. The exhibition focuses on the Central European traditions in the region, reflected in architecture and mentality.
It is organized jointly by the Foreign Ministry and the Romanian Ministry of Culture, and other Austrian and Romanian institutions and sponsors. The Austro-Romanian exhibition project is just one of the many examples of a common review of the history of cultural diversity in Central Europe. Especially in the context of further promoting the European project to shape the future "united in diversity", it is necessary to deal with historical facts, both uniting and dividing ones. During its EU Presidency in 2006, Austria initiated a thematic focus on South-East Europe, which is being implemented by the Foreign Ministry through a cultural cooperation programme titled "Culture Matters". The exhibition "Empire at the Periphery" is part of this programme, which aims at making artistic creations from this area more widely known in EU Member States.
Sibiu 2007 will feature more than 1,000 events in various arts disciplines. As part of the European Cultural Capital year, the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs has initiated and supported some thirty projects in the areas of music (concerts by the Aron Quartett, by Franz Koglmann and exxj - ensemble xx. jahrhundert, and the Vienna Art Orchestra), theatre (performances of "Damenwalzer", "Du wirst schon sehen" by Helmut Peschina and "The Dream" by D.R.Popescu; "Medea" by THEATERmeRZ), dance (participation by KABINETT AD. CO. with choreographer Paul Wenninger at the Sibiu Danse 2007 Festival), science (symposium on "Aufklärung heute") and exhibition ("Spacelove" - Michaela Konrad, "Der gesichtslose Blick" - Kunstraum NOE).
