Plassnik: "2004 Quantum leap in overcoming the division of Europe"
Foreign Minister presents Foreign Policy Report 2004 to Council of Ministers
Vienna, 25 October 2005 - At today’s Ministerial Council meeting, Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik presented the Foreign Policy Report 2004. "In 2004, the decades-long division of Europe was overcome through the enlargement of the European Union and the accession of our neighbouring states", said Plassnik, underlining the highlight of the previous year.
In addition to the thematic focus on "Austria in the European Union", the 406-page yearbook is also devoted to Austria’s neighbourhood policy, the consular dimension of foreign policy, the situation in the crisis regions, Austria’s commitment to strengthening human rights, international cultural policy and the restructuring of Austria’s Cooperation with Eastern Europe and Development Cooperation programmes.
The main objective of the Foreign Policy Report is to provide comprehensive information on the most important developments and events in international politics in 2004 and on Austria’s role in international relations. In addition, the Report aims to meet the requirements of a year-book directed at a wide spectrum of readers in the fields of administration, diplomacy, science, business and the press.
"Only if interested Austrians can understand what we are doing, why we are doing it and how we are doing it will we receive the necessary support for our foreign, European, international cultural and development policy", added Plassnik.
The Council of Ministers approved the Foreign Policy Report 2004 at today’s meeting and passed it on to Parliament for further debate.
