Dr. Helga Konrad appointed new OSCE Special Representative on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings
Vienna, 14 May 2004 - Former Austrian government minister Dr. Helga Konrad was today appointed as the new Special Representative on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings by the Permanent Council of the OSCE. Dr. Konrad was chosen for the prominent post thanks to her successful chairmanship of the Task Force on Trafficking in Human Beings of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, which she took up during Austria's chairmanship of the OSCE in 2000. Dr. Konrad's new function will be based in Vienna, where she will be supported by an Anti-Trafficking Assistance Unit. In July 2003 the Permanent Council of the OSCE adopted an Action Plan to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings, which primarily focuses on the coordination of measures aimed at prevention of trafficking in human beings, protection of victims and prosecution of those who facilitate or commit the crime.
