Foreign Minister Plassnik welcomes EP's approval of EU Commission
"Broad agreement is an important signal"
Vienna, 18 November 2004 - Minister for Foreign Affairs Ursula Plassnik expressed her pleasure at the European Parliament's approval of the designated European Commission following the vote in Strasbourg on Thursday: "This clear vote of confidence in the new EU Commission is an important signal; Europe needs both: a strong Commission and a strong Parliament," she said.
"If we want to get things done, all the European institutions must work closely together in a spirit of confidence", the Foreign Minister went on. Only in this way would the Union be able to master the many challenges it faces, added Plassnik, in this context particularly highlighting the future of South-East Europe, the Neighbourhood Policy, the situation in the Near and Middle East, the transatlantic dialogue and the fight against terrorism.
The new team could now set to work with a vengeance. "I am especially pleased that Benita Ferrero-Waldner will be able to take up her function as Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy. I wish her all the very best in this responsible role", said Plassnik.
