International Conference "Europe and the Arab World - Connecting Partners in Dialogue"

The conference "Europe and the Arab World – Connecting Partners in Dialogue" initiated by the Austrian Foreign Minister, Dr. Michael Spindelegger and the Secretary General of the Arab League, Amre Moussa, took place in the congress centre of the Vienna Hofburg from 17 to 19 December 2008. Among others, the Foreign Ministers of Oman, Morocco, Yemen, Spain, Hungary and the Czech Republic as well as the Palestinian Foreign Minister, the Minister of Culture of Egypt, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Develeopment of the United Arab Emirates, the Minister of Human Rights of Iraq, EU-Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Prince Turki Al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia and experts from politics, public administration, civil society, science and culture from EU Member States, from Turkey and from Arab League States were invited.
The topics of the working groups on 17 and 18 December and the round table on ministerial level on 19 December included the importance of civil society and the management of pluralism for sustainable development and lasting peace, the promotion of intercultural dialogue and the participation of young people in politics and society as well as the strengthening of women's role in public life.
