The Extra-European Area
Austria maintains diplomatic relations with 156 extra-European states, 117 of which have representations in Vienna, while Austria is represented with embassies in 43 countries outside of Europe.
Alongside the bilateral contacts established with these countries, Austria aims to closely harmonise her extra-European policies with those of her partners within the European Union. In this context, meetings between representatives of EU Member States and representatives of states in other regions play an important role. Some key fora set up to promote this exchange include, for instance, the EU-LAC summits (the European Union and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean) and the Asia-Europe Meetings (ASEM). Additionally, institutionalised dialogues are also maintained with the USA and Canada, as well as with the countries of the Middle East and Africa.
