International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

The verification of the civil use of nuclear material in order to prevent it being used for military purposes is the primary task of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Other tasks include the promotion of nuclear technologie for peaceful purposes and the strengthening of nuclear safety and security worldwide. The IAEA is the oldest and largest international organisation located in Vienna. In December 2009, Yukiya Amano of Japan took over as the new Director General of the IAEA.
