Michael Spindelegger was born in 1959 in Mödling, Lower Austria. After graduating in Law at Vienna University he was Assistant Lecturer at the Vienna University Institute of Criminal Law, served as civil servant for the Federal State of Lower Austria and worked for a number of companies.
Starting in 1992 he was repeatedly elected Member of the Austrian Parliament and also served as Member of the European Parliament, Speaker on Foreign Affairs of the Austrian Peoples Party, Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and as Vice-Chairman of the Austrian Peoples Party Parliamentary Group. In 2006 he was elected Second President of the Austrian National Council. Since 1998 Michael Spindelegger has also served as Chairman of the Employees’ Association of the Austrian People’s Party of Lower Austria.
On 2nd December 2008 he was appointed Austrian Federal Minister for European and International Affairs and in 2011 he was sworn in as Vice-Chancellor of the Republic of Austria. Michael Spindelegger is married with two sons.
