IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency was founded in 1957 and is an autonomous organisation within the UN system. Its core task is the worldwide promotion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the increase of nuclear safety as well as the verification of States’ compliance under the NPT regime. Yukiya Amano (Japan) has been the IAEA’s Director General since December 2009. In September 2013, Austria was voted to be part of the Board of Governors for two years at the 57th General Assembly.
