Economy
The most important economic sectors of Malta, an island with 316 km ² and about 400,000 inhabitants, are tourism (about 25% of the BIP), the semiconductor industry and ship repairs.
The balance of trade of Austria with Malta is traditionally positive, with a steadily growing plus.
Beside drinks, wood, paper, dairy products, steel or iron the export of machines and electric-technical goods are an especially important factor. The main exports of Malta are optical devices, pharmaceutical products, electrotechnical goods and toys.
