Vice-Chancellor Spindelegger on the 75th anniversary of the "Anschluss"
Vienna, 12 March 2013 – "The National Socialist catastrophe has left us with a very clear historic and moral responsibility", Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said on the 75th anniversary of the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany. The Anschluss marked the start of seven years of terror for the Jewish, Roma and Sinti peoples and others persecuted as enemies of the state by the Nazi regime. They were persecuted, exiled or murdered. Simultaneously Austria sank into the lowest depths of intellectual poverty.
At least 66,000 Austrian Jews were victims of the Shoa. Austrians were also directly and indirectly involved as perpetrators in this mass murder. Many others profited from the misery and desperate situation of the persecuted, choosing decisively to follow a course as fellow travellers and adjusting to the new power structure. Others watched in silence and withdrew into what has become known as inner emigration. "There were only a few people who participated in active resistance at the risk of their own lives. We of subsequent generations owe them our thanks and acclaim", Spindelegger said.
"We must ceaselessly pose the question to ourselves: what can and must we do, to prevent such terrifying events from repeating themselves and the crimes resulting from racism, anti-Semitism and inhuman contempt for people", Spindelegger said. "The frequently repeated demand for a ‘strong man’ in political life must always make us prick up our ears. I am thinking here in particular about the education of our young people. Because the coming generation must grow with the vigilance required for making a stand against the phenomena that characterised National Socialism, such as social exclusion, prejudice, social generalisation and discrimination", Spindelegger added.
On an international level, within the scope of the international Holocaust Task Force, Austria has also given its full backing to ensuring that the Holocaust can in future teach us to have the clear objective of preventing genocide and crimes against humanity. Further to this, various initiatives taken by the Austrian Foreign Ministry contribute to creating awareness of the need for establishing intercultural dialogue and tolerance and to condemning any growth of resentments in society. The 5th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations was held in Vienna only a few days ago with an agenda on "Strengthening responsible leadership in diversity and dialogue" with over 2000 participants from around the world.
Responsibility also means attending to the victims of National Socialism, their relatives and descendants. What counts here are above all the measures set by Austria to achieve at least a certain level of alleviation for the physical property losses the victims of the Nazis suffered, which have still not been compensated, to the extent that this was and is still possible at all after all the time that has passed since 1945. One of the priorities is to improve the social situation of elderly victims of National Socialism. "As Foreign Minister it is a personal objective of mine to establish and develop our contacts with Austrian victims of National Socialist persecution and their relatives now living abroad", Spindelegger concluded.
