Military Service

Basically the military service is compulsory for all male Austrian citizens from the age of 18 years to the age of 50 years.

All male Austrian citizens living permanently abroad must register with the Austrian Embassy or Consulate immediately after having reached their 17th birthday. Please fill out the notification form (see below - in German) and send it to the Embassy or Consulate.

If an Austrian later decides to move to Austria either permanently or for a long-term stay (e.g. one year study program), he must report to the provincial military command within three weeks of establishing residency in Austria.
