Bilateral Relations - Austria and Mauritius
Diplomatic relations were established after Mauritius became independent in 1968. The relations between Mauritius and Austria are friendly. Ambassador Dr. Otto Ditz presented his credentials on 3 March 2009.
Austrian State Secretary Hans Winkler paid an official bilateral visit to Mauritius in April 2007. In October 2007, former Foreign Minister Peter Jankowitsch met the head of government, Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam in Port Louis.
In 2007, Austria participated in the European Film festival with the movie “Die Gottesanbeterin” (Harracher, 2001).
Ambassador Irene Freudenschuss-Reichl led the Austrian delegation to the SADC Summit on Poverty Eradication in April 2008.
There are SOS Children’s Villages in Beau Bassin and Bamous together with a youth centre, two kinder gardens, and a social centre.
In 2006 10.483 Austrian tourists travelled to Mauritius, in 2007 the number has grown by 4.6 per cent to 10.969.
Austrian exports to Mauritius in 2005, increased more than 50%. The most important export goods are soft drinks, gaming equippment, and paper products. Austrian exports reached 5 Mill € in 2007. Austrian imports in 2007 valued above 8 Mill €. The imported goods are clothes, sugar, fish, and shellfish.
