Military Service
1) Military Service (Sec. 10 National Defense Act):
All male Austrian citizens from the age of 17 to the age of 51 are subject to compulsory military service. If under the age of 35, one must complete basic recruit training (lasting for eight months).
2) Registration (Sec. 18 National Defense Act):
All male Austrian citizens living permanently abroad must register with the Austrian Embassy or Consulate immediately after having reached their 17th birthday. Please fill out the notification form (below) and send it to the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa.
If an Austrian later decides to move to Austria either permanently or for a long-term stay (e.g. one year study program), he must report to the provincial military command within three weeks of establishing residency in Austria.
3) Reporting duties if staying abroad:
Austrian citizens subject to military service who intend to live abroad for more than six months must report to the provincial military command before leaving Austria. In addition, these Austrians must register with the Austrian Embassy or Consulate immediately upon arriving in the foreign country.
When returning to Austria, these Austrians must report to the provincial military command within three weeks of re-establishing residency in Austria.
