Bilateral Relations
Official Austrian-Canadian relations date back to 1855/56 when the first Austrian consular post was opened on Canadian soil in Halifax. In 1902, the first career consulate was set up in Montreal. The events of the two World Wars further reduced the few bilateral contacts that existed. It took until 1958 that an Austrian Embassy was eventually established in Ottawa.
Relations between Canada and Austria today are built on our common commitment to multilateralism, a growing trade and investment relationship and increasing people-to-people ties, particularly in the cultural field and among the youth.
