Elsie Slonim - Talk with book‐launch
Mrs. Elsie Slonim will give a talk (in English) entitled 'Remembering History - my always changing and adventurous life between the USA, Austria, Palestine/Israel and Cyprus from 1917 until today'. A remarkable and eventful life, which includes almost a century, characterized by displacement, exile and personal setbacks, but also by overwhelming motivation to start anew and be optimistic about the future.
Mrs. Elsie Slonim was born in Brooklyn in 1917. She spent her youth in Baden near Vienna and has been living in Cyprus for more than 70 years. Two world wars, the Great Depression, Nazism, the structure of the State of Israel and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus were witnessed up close. Today, she still lives in her home, which - since 1974 - is located in the middle of a restricted military area.
With this opportunity, Mrs. Slonim will also present her memoires 'Rosen aus der Sperrzone - Verwurzelung verboten' / 'Lemons from Paradise' , published in 2012 in German and English.
Both editions will be available for sale on site and can be signed by the author.
The event is a collaboration between the Goethe-Institut Cyprus, the Austrian Embassy Nicosia, the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation and the Cyprus-German Cultural Association.
