Travel to Austria
For information on requirements for the issuance of a visa for Austria, please click on one of the links mentioned below.
A visa will be issued for a maximum stay of 3 or 6 months depending on the category:
Schengen Visa
- Tourist/Business Visa (Visa for a short stay up to 90 days, Visa C) or
National Visa
- Long Term Visa (Visa for a stay between 91 to 180 days, Visa D)
Application Process
Please, take note of the following
- Applications have to be submitted at the Embassy of the country that is your main destination.
- In some countries without an Austrian representation (Embassy, Consulate), visas of the category A and C can be issued by the Schengen embassies and consulates that represent Austria according to Schengen regulations.
- Visa applications for short term stays shall be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to travel. If the application is lodged less than 15 calendar days before departure, issuance of the visa before departure cannot be guaranteed. In certan cases, when additional information is required, the processing time can be several weeks long.
- A visa application can only be processed after submission of all requisite documents.
- Applications cannot be submitted more than 3 months prior to departure.
- The entire period on the territory of the Member States must be covered by a travel medical inssurance. The minimum coverage for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment/death must be EUR 30.000,-.
- The passport/valid travel document must be valid more than 3 months after the intended departure of the territory of the Member States. It must not be older than10 years and contain at least two blank pages. Passports with corrected names are no longer accepted.
- Holders of official passports (Diplomatic- or Service Passports) will be granted a gratis visa upon submission of a note verbal.
- The Consulate may decide to interview an applicant and may require that the applicants report back to the Embassy upon their return.
- The Embassy will provide information about the visa status only to the applicant or his authorized agent and earliest after a period of 15 days. Telephone inquiries cannot be accepted, only email and fax are.
Short Term Visa
Applicants are invited to submit their applications at one of the Visa Facility Service (VFS) centers.
Applications may also be submitted at the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi but out of technical reasons only against prior appointment via phone no. +91-(0)11-2688 9170.
Resident Permit (stay more than 180 days)
Applications for resident permits can only be made in person at the Embassy or Honorary Consulate (with the exception of Sri Lanka) by the applicants themselves by prior appointment.
The decision is made by the concerned authority in Austria and cannot be influenced by the Embassy.
The applicant will be informed automatically by the Embassy, after the decision was made. Enquiries to the Embassy are therefore futile and will not be answered.
Employment
A Schengen visa does only under limited circumstances permit short term employment in Austria! Applicants who look for work in Austria may contact the Public Employment Service Austria (AMS) or private employment services.
