Nepal
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Austria and the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal have been established on 15 August 1959.
Since the beginning of the 1990s, Nepal was part of one of the focus regions of the Austrian Development Cooperation. With numerous projects in the areas of rural development, tourism development and fight against poverty Austria supported the civil war torn country. The Austrian Development Cooperation’s particular focus on Nepal was kept until after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in 2006. In 2008, the last Austrian projects in Nepal were successfully completed.
Austria actively supports the constitution drafting process in Nepal. In November 2009, a high ranking delegation of Nepalese constitutional lawyers called on Austrian law experts in Vienna to discuss the conceptualization of and practical experience with the Austrian Constitution. A follow-up meeting was held in summer 2010.
In the framework of the “North-South-Partnership”, Austria promotes advanced training of skilled workers and graduates in Austria as well as in training centres in the region.
Also on the cultural level, bilateral cooperation is excellent. Among the most successful completed projects figure the transformation of the King’s Palace in Patan into a museum and the restoration of the historic gardens of Keshar Mahal (Garden of the Six Seasons) in Kathmandu.
The Austrian Honorary Consulate in Kathmandu looks after Austria’s consular interests in Nepal. It acts under the overall direction of the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi, whose Ambassador is also accredited to Nepal.
In Austria, Nepal is represented by its Embassy in Berlin and by the Nepalese Honorary Consulate in Vienna.
