Bangladesh
The Republic of Austria and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh maintain friendly relations since the beginning of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.
The launch of economic talks in April 1997 led to the first official visit by an Austrian delegation since Bangladesh’s independence. The following years saw continuous efforts to strengthen the economic relations between the two countries.
Today, Austro-Bangladeshi economic ties are based on the Agreement for the Promotion and Protection of Investments (2001) and the Agreement on Bilateral Economic Relations and Economic, Industrial and Technological Cooperation (2002). In February 2002, the first meeting of the Austria-Bangladesh Joint Working Group took place.
Also on the cultural level bilateral relations are excellent. In November 2010 for example, the Austrian Cultural Forum New Delhi organized a concert of the young Austrian string ensemble „Acies Quartett“ in Dhaka.
The Austrian Ambassador in New Delhi is also accredited to Bangladesh. Under the overall direction of the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi, the Honorary Consulate in Dhaka looks after Austria’s consular interests in Bangladesh. In December 2009, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce opened an office in Dhaka.
Bangladesh is represented in Austria through its Embassy in Berlin.
