Bilateral Relations - Democratic Republic of Congo
Official ties between Austria and the Democratic Republic of Congo date back to 1948 when an Austrian Honorary Consulate was opened in Leopoldville, as the capital of Belgian-Congo was called. At the end of 1972 an Embassy was established in Kinshasa. However, the Embassy had to be closed in 1993 due to civil strife and unrest in the country. A new Austrian Honorary Consul General was appointed in August 1994 and has been in office in Kinshasa since.
