Medicines

The introduction of medicines into Austria is in principle only possible when import authorisation has been granted. This document is issued by the Federal Ministry for Health and Women's Issues.

However, travellers resident in one of the EU-countries can re-import medicines which they have acquired before leaving Austria. For EU-residents no import authorisation is necessary for medicines bought abroad as long as the quantity of each medicine does not exceed three retail packages such as are normally available for private persons.

It is however advisable for people needing medication to carry a letter by their doctor.
