Dialogue of Cultures
The Dialogue of Cultures is an important topic in the bilateral relations between Austria and Indonesia.
A short-term diplomatic exchange programme between the Foreign Ministries of Austria and Indonesia was successfully conducted in 2008. In June 2008 a delegation of Muslim scholars visited Vienna and in May 2009, a symposium with the title "State, Law and Religion in Pluralistic Societies - Austrian and Indonesian Perspectives" was held in Vienna; officials, scholars, faith representatives as well as journalists of both countries actively contributed to the success of this interfaith event.
In September 2010, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry in cooperation with the CRCS (Centre for Religious and Cross-Cultural Studies at the Universitas Gadjah Mada) a follow-up event was conducted in Yogyakarta.
On the occasion of the state visit of the Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer to Indonesia, a joint statement on the cooperation in the field of dialogue of cultures was sigend by the Foreign Ministries - with both Presidents attending the signing.
In June 2011, an Indonesian delegation made up of officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and of Religious Affairs, faith, civil society and media representatives, attended a bilateral symposium on religious pluralism and freedom of religion in Vienna and Salzburg. The next dialogue event is scheduled to be held in Indonesia in 2012.
