Customs and Import Regulations
Extensive information on what to be aware of when entering Austria or the European Union is to be found in the "Customs Guide - A practical guide when coming to Austria" published by the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Relocating to Austria:
If an individual living outside the EU is relocating to Austria, he can take with him the following used household items without having to pay duties and fees:
a) furniture, clothing, personal belongings, appliances, computers
b) bikes, motorcycles, cars
c) limited amount of food and beverages
d) pets
You may NOT take with you:
a) Alcoholic beverages, tobacco, cigarettes
b) trucks and similar vehicles
c) items and appliances used in manufacturing
Please note:
a) The used items you bring along must have been in your possession for at least six months (proof might be required).
b) You must have been lived at your current residence for at least twelve months (proof is required).
c) You are not allowed to sell any of the used items you bring with you within twelve months following your relocation to Austria.
d) If you bring a car with you, you need to apply for a Grundlagenbescheid at one of the main customs offices (e.g. Hauptzollamt Wien, phone: 01143 1 795900; e-mail: Post.100.zawnb@bmf.gv.at) before shipping the car to Austria.
