Customs & Import

Extensive information on what to be aware of when entering Austria or the European Union is to be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Finance.

If you live outside the EU and are relocating to Austria, you can take with you the following used household items without having to pay duties and fees:
a) furniture, clothing, personal belongings, appliances, computers
b) bikes, motorcycles, cars
c) limited amount of food and beverages
d) pets

You may Not take with you:
a) alcoholic beverages, tobacco, cigarettes
b) trucks and similar vehicles
c) items and appliances used in manufacturing

Please note:
a) The used items you take with you must have been in your possession for at least six months (proof may be required).
b) You must have been living at your current residence for at least twelve months (proof is required).
c) You are not permitted to sell any of the used items within twelve months of your relocation to Austria.
d) If you intend to bring a car with you, you must apply for a "Grundlagenbescheid" at one of the main customs offices, e.g.
