Import of Medicaments into Austria
As a matter of principle, medicinal products may only be imported into Austria after obtaining a permit by the Federal Ministry of Health (phone: +43 1 71100, e-mail: buergerservice(at)bmg.gv.at).
However, travellers with non-EU domicile do not need any import authorization for medicinal products that are duty-free (i.e. in quantities for their personal use only). It is recommended that, if applicable, you carry with you the relevant prescription or a written statement from your doctor.
The import of medicinal products containing substances classified as a narcotic (e.g. morphine) into Austria is prohibited.
Please note, that it is possible for a tourist to obtain a prescription for any necessary medication from a registered doctor in Austria. In this case it is advisable to bring along a letter from your Australian specialist or local health authority confirming the required treatment.
