Death of an Austrian citizen
In case of death of an Austrian citizen abroad the Austrian Embassy will assist in facilitating the repatriation, cremation or burial in Australia or the Consular district of the Embassy if necessary. The place and type of burial is primarily determined by the (last) will of the deceased. If no relevant decree or will exists the next of kin (usually the spouse, grown up children, parents and siblings of the deceased, in this order) has the right of disposition.
Further information (in German) is available via the website of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and international Affairs.
Please inform the nearest Austrian Embassy or Consulate of the death of an Austrian national abroad.
To be submitted:
- Death Certificate (certified copy)
- Austrian passport (original for cancellation)
If the deceased was the recipient of Austrian pension payments the Austrian Pension Insurance Agency has to be informed additionally.
