The bilateral relations between Austria and Lebanon are marked by a long-standing friendly relationship. After having been closed for 13 years the Austrian Embassy in Beirut reopened in September 1999. This step was very much welcomed by Lebanese authorities and helped to reestablish stronger ties during the last decade.
A further milestone in Austrian-Lebanese relations was the donor conference for the reconstruction of the destroyed Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr El Bared held in June 2008 in Vienna, organised by Austria following a request by the Lebanese government. The conference manifested Austria’s commitment to the cause and helped to further enhance its good reputation in the Arab World. In the follow-up to the conference, Austria continued its engagement by financing various projects linked to the reconstruction of Nahr el Bared, for example a women’s vocational training centre whose first graduates were celebrated in April 2010.
