‘SMRITI’ , a screening of work by Kay Walkowiak
In the screening „Smriti“ , three short film works by Kay Walkowiak were showcased at the Austrian Cultural Forum New Delhi:
„Melancholia“, 2013, 7 min.(produced in Varanasi during the two months residency scholarship at Kriti Gallery granted by Land Salzburg and Austrian Embassy New Delhi), „The City Beautiful“, 2010, 20 min. (produced in Chandigarh) and „Internal Departure“, 2013 (produced in Vienna). All three works are connected through the theme of „Memory“.
Kay Walkowiak spent two months on an artist in residency programme at the Kriti Gallery in Varanasi. The stay was made possible through a scholarship granted by the Land Salzburg and the Austrian Embassy New Delhi.
During his residency the artist created a number of short films such as „Melancholia“, 2013, “Making sense out of abstraction”, 2013, “Dislocated Traces”, 2013 as well as sculptural works and photographic art.
All of his works created in India are based on a conceptual approach of intercultural convergence and trying to grasp the notion of daily life in India such as the individual creation of meaning, cultural memory and perception of reality. His work at the Kumbh Mela has been documented in the media.
Kay Walkowiak‘s (*1980, Salzburg) sculptural, photographic and film works stage everyday objects in absurd choreographies, exploring the mechanics of form, and challenging the viewer to act upon their ambiguous invitations. The associative qualities of these forms and the mental space which they yield, lead to a complex relationship between the object and viewer. Unable to comprehend the imaginary performances, we irrevocably become a part of their ambiguous scenarios.
