Mann Faqeeri - A Journey through Kashmiri Sufiyana Music
An evening by the Austrian Cultural Forum Film Club showcasing a special documentary on Sufi music in the Kashmir region. The film was introduced by director M.K. Raina, who was also available for an interesting Q&A session with the audience after the film, which raised a number of questions related to the documentary, the making of the film, as well as the thoughts and issues around the topic.
With the advent of Islam in Kashmir, a new intra-cultural exchange took place among Central Asia, Persia and India. From these exchanges, came a new syncretic cultural mosaic in the Valley containing essences of Islam, Shaivism and Buddhism.
The Film explores this syncretic tradition, both past and present, through Sufiyana kalam of the Valley. It traces its long tradition of singing verses of poets, from the 13th century poet Lull Dedh, to contemporary poets, in the context of the unbroken relationship among music, poetry and the changing landscape of the Valley.
M.K. Raina is one of India's best-known theatre actors and directors. After graduating from National School of Drama in 1970 he has worked in film as well as theatre across the country and internationally. Besides directing extensively for the stage and acting in a large number of productions himself, he has also made documentaries and has been involved with efforts to preserve performing arts traditions in Kashmir and worked on developing various cultural aspects in the region for the past 30 years.
