Contemporary Austrian art exhibition at Lalilt Kala Akademi Galleries
On 9 February 2013 a large crowd gathered at the renowned Lalit Kala Akademi Galleries in New Delhi for the opening of the new exhibition ’Artists in Multifunctions’. Curated by Peter Weibel, the show includes works from 22 contemporary artists and outstanding staff members of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, ranging from photography and painting to 3D animation, video performance and light installation. It represents the most comprehensive exhibition of contemporary western art in India in the past years as well as the largest display of Austrian art in India ever.
In the presence of some of the artists the audience could engage further with their artworks. The modern architectural space of the Lalit Kala Akademi Galleries, which is unique in its quality in Delhi, showed off the displayed artworks perfectly. An accompanying exhibition catalogue containing articles on contemporary artistic theories was also presented.
The showcase underlined the importance of the mobility of ideas, aesthetic approaches and artistic collaborations which go further than crossing geographic borders. The questioning of contemporary topics through the various state-or-the-art media is of particular relevance and unique in the art scene in India.
With support of the Austrian Cultural Forum New Delhi, this project presents a unique opportunity for both institutions and leaves a long lasting impact for the future to continue the introduction of fresh art and the exchange of modern ideas.
As part of the ongoing artistic dialogue, the Lalit Kala Akedemi will display artworks of the most noted contemporary Indian artists in the exhibition space of the University of Applied Arts in Vienna later this year.
