Seminar and interactive session on "In Search for Common Creative Spaces"
to discuss the use of art and artistic expression
as a means for intercultural communication
When? 1 October 2011 from 10 am to 12:30 pm
Where? Austrian Cultural Forum New Delhi
Synopsis:
Prof. Helmi VENT, Head of the Department “Lab Inter Arts” at the University Mozarteum Salzburg for music and dramatic arts, Austria, will host the seminar.
Under the directorship of Prof. VENT, in 2009 and 2010, young Austrian artists (musicians, dancers, actors) came to India. Based upon research and impressions of Indian culture, public life and space, discussions with Indian artists, interactions with ordinary people, and contemplation of the Western “self” in the Indian context, they developed performance projects. The premise was to not travel to India to present a predisposed artwork (outcome oriented), but that the artwork results from the impressions gained and dialogue developed with the new Indian culture (process oriented). As part of the process, the projects were staged in public space, and intercultural communication through artistic means was sought with the incidental artists – ordinary Indian people.
Indian partner institutions for implementation of the project included the Kala Academy in Goa and the Sir J.J. School of Arts, University of Mumbai.

Objective:
In the framework of this seminar, Prof. VENT seeks to discuss the project with and obtain feedback from Indian experts and artworkers. Based on the results, a third phase of the project shall be developed and implemented in India in 2012. A 40-minute documentary film “City Walks Mumbai 2010” about the project will be screened during the seminar.
