About the composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828): Franz Schubert, born shortly after Mozart's death, is Austria's prime representative of the early Romantic era. A student of Antonio Salieri, he left an enormous oeuvre despite his short life, creating operas, operettes, symphonies, and masses, but he is most well known for his songs ("A winter's journey; A swan's song; The beautiful miller's wife) and musical interpretations of poems by Goethe and Heine. While Schubert was not famous during his lifetime, he was quickly discovered after 1828 and is today one of the most performed Austrian classical composers.
