... at the Permanent Mission
Interested Austrian citizens who have just finished or are in the process of finishing their studies and would like to gain some insight into professional life at a permanent mission and in international organisations, are invited to apply for a position as a trainee/intern. Participants in this paid traineeship programme will get the opportunity to take part in the daily work of the mission and also accompany delegations to meetings of the various institutions.
The duration of such an internship, which is based on the Austrian Contractual Employee Act (“Vertragsbedienstetengesetz”) is normally three months. The Austrian Foreign Ministry provides a – small – financial contribution (“Ausbildungsbeitrag”) for the trainee. Details about the requirements for such an internship can be found here (in German only).
For their traineeship interns will join a professional and dedicated team in a pleasant office environment. Contacts with trainees from other permanent missions as well as the international organisations themselves will enrich the learning experience.
Important note: A person having completed a paid traineeship at an Austrian Permanent Mission, Embassy or Consulate-General, later will not be eligible for a traineeship ("Verwaltungspraktikum") in the Foreign Ministry in Vienna. More information on general terms and conditions of traineeships with the Foreign Ministery can be found here (in German only).
The Permanent Misson of Austria in Geneva can accept only a very limited number of trainees per year. Given the structure of the UN meeting schedule with its busiest periods in the spring and in the fall, traineeships at the Permanent Mission Geneva are encouraged mainly between lat January and the beginning of July as well as from mid-September to mid-December. Applications together with a curriculum vitae can be addressed directly to the Permanent Mission of Austria in Geneva (e-mail: genf-ov(at)bmeia.gv.at) well in advance, as the required security clearances normally take at least two months.
