Organisations in Vienna
Along with New York, Geneva and Nairobi, Vienna is one of the four United Nations Headquarters. The United Nations System came to Vienna almost 50 years ago. First guest was the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) followed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.
In order to attract more international organisations to Vienna, the Austrian Federal Government made an offer in 1966 to the United Nations to construct an international centre in Vienna, which could serve as headquarters for further UN organisations. When the Vienna International Centre opened its doors in 1979, a number of other United Nations offices moved to the banks of the Danube.
Cultural life and also the Austrian economy are benefiting substantially from the presence of the international organisations in Vienna. Thanks to Austria’s exceptional location as a crossway between the east and the west of Europe, the expansion of Vienna as a seat of international organisations is and will remain one of the top priorities of the Republic of Austria.
