Waldner: “Using available EU funds in a better and more efficient way”
State Secretary Waldner negotiating EU financial framework 2014-2020
Luxembourg, 24 April 2012 – “Today’s discussions are focusing on the common agricultural policy and the promotion of disadvantaged and weaker regions in the framework of the structural and cohesion policies“, Austrian State Secretary Waldner said in Luxembourg, where he is currently attending another round of negotiations between the Ministers of Foreign and European Affairs on the future EU budget.
“Our main objective is to preserve sustainable and environmentally sound agriculture in all regions of Austria, also in mountainous regions and less-favoured areas. And this is what I have advocated in the negotiations today”, the State Secretary said.
“In times when EU funds are scarce, we are in general supporting a better and more efficient deployment of the funds available. This spending should also provide momentum for growth”, Waldner said.
Austria has always campaigned for a logical strategic orientation of support schemes. “Besides the upper limits for individual countries, the issue of where and how the funds are being used in times of austerity measures must also be monitored. Funds should not be distributed in an undifferentiated way”, the State Secretary said.
“Austria is working towards a Europe that is crisis resistant, a Europe that can offer a successful future for our children. Following the crisis-fighting measures of the past few months, it is now important to ensure economic growth which will also generate more jobs. The keys to this are research and innovation, “green” growth, as well as targeted promotion of small and medium-sized companies. I will be giving my full personal support to these issues in the negotiations”, Waldner concluded.
