Spindelegger warns of new spiral of violence in the Middle East
Foreign Minister on the escalation of violence in Gaza
Vienna, 15 November 2012 – “The most recent escalation of hostilities in the south of Israel and the Gaza strip is highly alarming. The standard pattern of reaction and counter reaction between Israel and Hamas must finally be broken. The Middle East is on the brink of experiencing a new spiral of violence, the effects of which are incalculable given that civil war is raging in Syria at the same time “, Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said in a first response to the current acute crisis in the Middle East.
Spindelegger called upon the Israeli government and the leaders in the Gaza strip to keep a low profile, to respect international law and to take the justified fears and concerns of civilians on both sides of the border seriously. “Fighting violence by mere violence is certainly doomed to fail. The bloodshed on both sides is blocking the way for a permanent, peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict”, the Vice-Chancellor said and referred to the urgency of resuming the negotiation process between Israel and Palestine.
